    I loved Robocop, but its view of Detroit, even in the future, was really fucked. Detroiters get shat upon a lot in the movies. Still loved the movie, though.

    I remember being round a friends house at the age of about 11 and watching the opening Murphy death scene behind the sofa. It's still a brutal scene.

    The Detroit parts of those movies were actually shot in Detroit. Except for the interiors.

    And Axel's boss was a real Detroit cop - an officer named Gil Hill. He went on to be a city councilman a few years later. (You can tell he wasn't a real actor.)

    I never saw the proper, uncut, version till I got the DVD. They always edit it ever-so slightly on TV, even here.

    I caught a bit of Robocop on TV not so long ago. The special effects really haven't held up too well. I think they used a lot of stock animation so it has that old school Harryhausen Clash of the Titans look to it.

    He was apparently a tough but fair boss. I think he was a captain. On local talk shows, he admitted he was not as prone to tantrums as in the movie, but his officers said he could be a hard-ass.
