If you can get anyone who doesnt just love you to drink your microbrew beer, than yes, you'd be in that rare, tiny percentage of people who havent angered everyone they know by inflicting it on them. Then, like shine, they can be really good, much better than the mass produced stuff. But that is well and truly rare.

lol @ both comments - so true!

I've had both home brewed shit beer and shine, but i've also both great beer and shine. Some folks do have it down to a science. I've also had some home made muskidime whine that was better than any fruit drink you could put in front of me. Just depends on the brewer.

I'll add that it is also about what you want from your beer.

Do you want to get drunk and have a hangover in the morning and not worry about what your beer tastes like, cause after shot #2 or tequilla, you can't taste anything any way? Have a mass produced beer, that way you don't waste the good stuff.

Do you want to have a beer that fits your need, like a fine wine? Brew it yourself and you can control the flavor and mouthfeel. Like I said earlier, most wheat beers produced in mass add citrus or corriander to their brew. They also filter many times, and that removes the nutrients from the beer that keep you from getting hangovers.

I go down to the local farmers market, but my grains, then to a brew store to get my yeast. Spend 1 night actually brewing the beer and putting it into a fermentation bucket or bottle, then a week or two later (depending on the type of beer) I move to a clarifying stage (which is just transferring to another bottle or bucket) then I put it in bottles with either sugar or honey, wait another week or two for carbonation, then refridgerate and drink!

I know every last ingredient that goes into my beer and none of it will kill ya. Unless you have a severe allergy to a grain, yeast, or honey (if I use that).

So I spend 3 nights making my beer, and the rest of the process is the stuff sitting in a cabinet or refridgerator waiting to be ready. I spend about $30 per batch and get anywhere from 48-60 bottles per batch ot of it. Which ends up cheaper than what I would pay for beer at the store.

:soapbox: I better step down now, or I could take up a lot of space.

definitely don't accept stuff from a beginner, it is way to easy to mess up the process and make a bad beer.

I also say beware of the "fancy" beers (fruit flavored or chocolate, etc.), that means they are testing it on you, and tests are never good.

My first 2 batches were crap, but I know a brewmaster and could ask him, "Where did I screw up" he tastes it and says "to much, to little, or did you clean your ___" amazing what little items can make a big difference.

And those kits that you buy to hang in your closet purchased from sharper edge or amazon, those just make bad beer.

I do have people that don't even know me that have had my beer and sent me letters (the troops) asking me to send more. I have a cousin that is a captain, he took the plain unlabeled bottles over with him saying they were root beer, distributed them to his team and maybe it was because they were sitting in middle of a desert, but they liked it. My co-workers liked it to, and were never afraid to tell me where to shove anything, so I trusted their opinion.

How are you able to ship alcohol? Do you have a special permit?

That's always the test that counts. If folks want more, you have a viable product.

I knew a guy in florida years ago, who made fruit wine in 5 gallon paint buckets on the porch of his bungalow. 1 bucket for him and his friends, one bucket for the beach bums around the area. Deal was, he'd keep making mthat extra bucket, if the bums would watch his place and make sure no one stole his bucket.

Safest fucking place in Daytona Beach was his front porch.

I don't ship it. People just show up at the house and take it home with them. My cousin only comes around a couple times a year, so I have plenty of notice from him and can usually get a batch put together for him to take back.

In OK if you are producing less than 50 gallons per year, it is considered for personal use and you do not need a permit or anything, as long as you don't sell it. I give it away to those who want it. I can always make more.

If I enter into any competitions, or decide to sell it, I have to pay an annual fee of $20 for a license to the state, and then I could ship it. I was going to do that this year and enter the state fair competition, but lost track of time and didn't get a batch started in time for entry.

same way as always. Just put it in unlikely containers and keep your mouth shut, probably.

For beer, when I was a kid, it was listerine bottles. Nobody ever looked or checked all thru highschool.

ah, I thought it was illegal period...just like driving across a state line with another states' beer in your vehicle.

lol - reminds me of one of the last trips I took to Chicago. A couple of the guys that work for that company wanted me to bring them some shine - it was like 2 weeks after Vick had traces of pot in his water bottle. I said, nope don't think that's gonna happen.

highschool and summers before 21, drinking all the time.

Post 21, unless it's for a good reason (deaths-divorce-etc) casual drinker, usually with food. Except of course for beer required activities (mowing lawn, working on car, fireworks, etc). Not much else.
