    Have you tried making a duplicate or new layer........then set the layer blend mode to color......Layer blend mode is the drop box in the layers window right under where it says Layers...Try that and paint... Lemme know if that helps.

    PS if you have never played around with the layer blend modes.......you are in for a whole new world of creativity.......
