No, but not all dogs will protect you either. the types that do are usually classified as aggressive breeds. A gun if you don't use it only needs to be checked out once a year for any oiling and rust maintenance. Shooting a gun is not difficult, but i would rather have one and give myself a chance against an intruder than risk waiting 4-5 minutes for a cop to show up and protect me. At least with a gun in my hand i have a fighting chance.

I don't have kids, but that doesn't mean i don't practice safe gun storage practices. I have a half ton 48 gun safe in my garage bolted to the ground for all my other guns, and my 9mm is in a locked nightstand and is opened up when i am home. If my nieces or nephews come by to visit it gets locked. My sister and brother-in-law knows my practices well enough to let me babysit them for them while they go out. I am very safe with firearms around my house.

 

I've taken em awhile. I'm good. No worries.

 

USMC Rules For Gun Fighting

Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.

Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.

Only hits count. A close miss is still a miss.

If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough nor using cover correctly.

Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movements are preferred.)

If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.

In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.

Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

Use a gun that works EVERY TIME.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

Always cheat = always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

Have a plan. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.

Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them).

The faster you finish the fight, the less shot up you will get.

Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with a "4".

If you don't know the answer, you don't need a gun.

Shepherds don't tend to bark unless there's a reason to, if they're properly trained. You can apply that to most German breeds in fact. As to the rest, you might consider moving.

 

I use to have one to, sable in color and peaked out at 65 pounds. Smartest dog i had ever owned. It took me less than 15 minutes to train her on any simple tricks. She died of old age and i started getting into hunting at the time so i bought a german shorthair pointer instead. Sometimes i miss her intelligence in a dog. I wish my bird dog was half as smart but she gets me the birds so i don't care.

 

I'm a black in Tang Soo Do. LIke Chuck Norris! NOt much different than simple tae kwon do. pfft. But still useful.

 

i agree with your assessment. I wouldn't recommend him a gun either unless he knows what he needs one for. A gun is a tool, it is used to serve a purpose. If you don't know what purpose it is for then i would wait on owning one. Me i am happy with my 13 firearms.

It's a known fact that dogs are the best deterent against intruders, even the yappy little fuckers you can punt half a football field. Intruders don't like drawing attention to themselves.
