Diamonds Are Forever refers to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The Spy Who Loved Me refers to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Moonraker refers to The Spy Who Loved Me. For Your Eyes Only refers to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Licence to Kill refers to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The World Is Not Enough refers to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Die Another Day is chock-full of references. And then, of course, there are all the recurring supporting characters. So there's definitely a continuity in those first 20 movies.

    with that arguement, Bond would have to be an old man by Die Another Day if it's supposed to be the same person in all 20 films. To me, there's two ways of looking at the series. The first being they're all connected like you state above, or separate series with each different actor.

    That's how I like to view it anyway. Cause Pierce Brosnan-Goldeneye Bond is definitely not the Goerge Lazenby Bond.

    Of course we could argue about that for a long time :p

    It's not even about references or characters.

    Never Say Never Again is not an `official` Bond movie because it wasn't made by the same company. That's why none of the `Bond` cast (M, Moneypenny, Q) were in it. It was Connery and a different studio trying to make some cash.

    And failing miserably.
