Well here is my latest attempt at getting back to me pirates life... Your thoughts and input would be appreciated.

One question I have is about sizing. To fit the sig size I had to cut out more of the background than I wanted to. Is there a technique I should learn tht would help with that?

 

The cutout on this is awesome but i think the b/g doesnt fit. it's be better with a star wars scene behind it IMO. something in blue or sand colours as yoda is muddled with the background.

Not really; few background or other pics will have a 3:1 ratio (like 450x150).
If you want to use a background of let’s say 2560x1200, you’ll need to cut of about 347 px in height to achieve the 3:1 ratio.
I tend to kick off with a new document of 3600x1200 and place the back into it; yep it leaves 1040 px horizontally blank or transparent.
This is where you’ll need to get creative and fill the left and/or right side of the background.
Duplicate it, stamp clone it etc…, use a second background and blend/brush/heal/stamp it. If some areas are not to your liking, use foreground pics to hide them.
Let’s say the boat in your sig is something you really want; extract (pen tool/erase etc…) it and paste it into a new background (sea,clouds etc…) that fits the 3:1 ratio, or use the original background and blend/brush/clone so it fits.

As to this sig; it's OK to have a partial view on the boat. One remark, purely taste, I think the girl is too far from the focal point of the pic (lighted skull on sail). I'd loose the pirate on the left, move boat a bit to left, move compass slightly to right and place girl between sail and compass.

In short, being creative often means of lot of tedious work.

 

I started to comment on this earlier today but got interupted. Its a fine sig as is but, if you really wanted more of the ship, TCF basically covers the same as I would suggest. Of course, there are different ways to go about it.

This is on the assumption you couldnt make the ship background wide enough after cutting the pic to the desired height. Find or create a blank sig, preferably to the tone of your sig contents. Cut out as much of the ship as you wanted to see, reduce it to the required 150 height and place it on your blank. You can either duplicate (copy) that layer and move it around to fill your gaps or use the marquee tool to select and copy sections (layer via copy)from the scene you want to extend. Blend the overlapping edges afterwards with the eraser tool set at an opacity of about 25. I used that last method for widening the curtain on this sig.

You do everything the hard way TCF....too drunk to explain. There are tons of other shortcuts. Most of the sig makers here are new....try to make it a little easier for them.
