The short story on Middle Eastern immigration to Dearborn/Detroit: Ford Motor Co. ... Immigrants came here for the plentiful blue collar work available during the automotive boon times. They sponsored relatives to come over, who also became citizens and worked in shitty factory environments (the Ford Rouge Plant in Dearborn was where the work was). So, repeat the process over a few decades and that's that.

Which makes sense of course. Still, the climate change from the mideast to the midwest is fairly profound. I would imagine that because Detroit is more or less a half dead bug lying on its back with its pathetic little legs giving the occasional twitch, the mostly hot weather Muslims would've found a more accomodting climate in America - Las Vegas perhaps. But that doesn't appear to be the case. It just goes to show how strong cultural ties are among that lot. They found a home here and they've stayed loyal to it. Good for them.

What cracks me up are all the Italian immigrants in Canada. Not just Toronto, but farther north. My ex-in-laws were from Italy and live way north of Toronto. But, when the first one came to Canada, the rest followed. Go figure.

 

You neglect to remember that Nortern Italy is in the Southern Alps. The last winter Olypics were held in Milano if you recall. If you are talking about Sicilians or southern Italians I would have to agree though. Of course, alot of Italians immagrants wound up staying in New York or traveled west to Chicago etc, neither of which region is known for its pleasant winter weather.

 

My ex-in-laws are from the southern tip of Italy and from Sicily. That's what amazed me about them.

I was working. did a couple more hours of overtime as we had to regrade the runway today. graded the first 3000 feet of the runway, centre 100 feet. we have 2000 feet left to go and hopefully finish it off tomorrow.
