  2. Our gif only content threads have a rule where all thumbs must be posted as a static thumbnail that does not play. Currently imagebam made a change where they no longer produce static thumbs. Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

I'm just getting into it good - the other admin knows Linux and I do the Windows. I just know enough about Unix and Linux to be able to write script files to ftp data between systems.

We went ahead with Red Hat because it's so well known and you don't have to worry about drivers - plus all our servers are IBM so the common is obviously there.

    Okay.

...I'm gonna download Xubuntu too. I have an old 1GHz P3 that I could install it onto.

There's loads of open source software out there, jump on some the tech boards and read what some of them have to say. The only problems I've ever heard was getting drivers for some the smaller flavors, but once you get them the OS works like horse - you never have to worry about it anymore. Not to mention OS resources, no comparison b/t Linux and Windows - Linux has a far less footprint.

I'm a big supporter of Open Source software (ie I use it, have never donated anything).
And yeah, drivers seems to be the main problem. There's always some hacker who'll get the job done though ^^

That's true with most people. Linux is a very good OS though once you get it setup. It's not "user friendly" with gui so most home users don't bother with it unless they just want to learn something new. The industry is starting to edge it's way towards it rather than Windows.

Ubuntu is, or at least I've read that it is, very Windows-ish.
I don't think it'd be very difficult to switch from windows to Ubuntu, with only basic to zero knowledge about Linux.

I've used Mac OS the most, then Windows, and dabbled in some Suse Linux
