    In Virginia, counties are the area that's not in cities (you're either in a city or a county, but not both). In most of the US, cities are in counties (but there are other exceptions--Baltimore, St Louis, Carson City are all not in any county) or in some cases there's a county the same size as the city (Denver for instance).

    Town vs. city I always thought was a matter of government (mayors in cities, town councils/meetings in towns). There are definitely towns that are a lot bigger than some cities, but in general cities tend to be bigger.

    Metro areas aren't well defined and can easily cross large swaths (e.g. the DC metro area contains the District of Columbia (city in no state); Chevy Chase Maryland (part of Montgomery County); Fairfax County, VA (contains no cities); and Alexandria, VA (independent city, not in a county))

    LA City limits are pretty big for the US--500 square miles makes it 14th biggest.

    Melbourne's like 3400 square miles.

    So yeah, just a mite larger.
