I think it would, i think most people would see it as a overreaction.

So the question becomes does Will Smith or anyone, have the right to commit violent acts on the behalf of others?

I would argue not, and so would the law in most countries.

Notable exceptions are places where sharia law are in effect, where male relatives often are allowed to punish those who offend their family, even if said offender is a member of their own family.

So, to write about the Chris Rock/Will Smith thing (since I know very little about the Hayden thing, and there's always the discussion to be had about "battered wife syndrome"): I saw that slap, and even if it's a convenient bit of controversy to boost ratings, that looked like it had serious force behind it. Regardless of whether Chris Rock was an arsehole for making that joke, it was a mild joke. One "comedian" called her a "bald-headed hoe," which angered me deeply, mostly because it's just an obscene thing to say and had no comedic value whatsoever (whereas Rock's joke had a punchline).

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote an interesting opinion piece about it stating that his action was a stain on the entertainment industry, on comedians, on feminism, and on black men. It's an interesting article, if you want me to post it, but one of the most interesting points brought up was by a comedian I don't care much for, but had a great point: Kathy Griffin wrote that he could set precedence for someone to come up on-stage should they be offended by a joke and assault a comedian. Don Rickles was famous for being an insult comic, and even Robin Williams made some uncomfortable comments towards audience members occasionally. Hell, could you imagine someone going up on-stage and punching Bob Saget? He quite often included the audience in his set.
