Sometimes it goes both ways. Scalawag was coined as such in the US, and filet is more traditional than fillet. Why the prevalence of realise and organise when the OED and Fowler's prefer realize and organize? Why foetus when the original is fetus?

And both are inconsistent at times. Arbor or arbour? Savory or savoury? Why reconnoitre but reconnoitered? Defensive but defence (especially when "defense" is an older spelling)? American is no better here (catalog or catalogue?).

And when Davy discovered the element, he proposed both alumium and aluminum as names, but _not_ "aluminium".

Gray is just wrong, though.

 

Of course it does, there are always inconsistencies, but only America actively and deliberately chooses to manipulate large parts of the language.

Sort of. Some of the "Americanisms" (-or in place of -our) were common in British english at one point (both were common), but they standardized on -our while the US standardized on -or. Some were Webster's simplifications. But things like -ize/-ise are systemic wrongnesses in the Queen's English (to the point where the proscriptive British sources actively argue against the so-called "British" spellings, as I mentioned).

But yeah, a lot of the US spellings go back to Webster's corruptions and he was pretty adamant about reforming things wholesale.

Long story that involves a misremembered (and incorrectly spelled) Simpsons reference turning into an (Americanized?) corruption.

If we did that how would we differentiate between words that sound similar but have different meaning like no and know? or to, two, and too? You would mess everything up and we would have to make up words for the things that are duplicates.

I have never been back. Been here 28 years of my life and have no plans on going back any time soon simply because i refuse to support such a oppressive government via bribes just to get out of the airport.
