Your grammar is brilliant compared with most on these boards.

The American habit of spelling everything phonetically (thus dropping the u out of colour, favour, humour etc.) does annoy me, but i'm an anal bastard when it comes to the Queen's English.

Haha it's not a habit, it's the proper American way...

If you look up "colour" in the dictionary, it says "The British spelling of 'color'"

But I can understand what you are saying I guess....

Which dictionary? the only true english dictionary is the oxford english dictionary that would spell it colour :D

Also it is spelt colour because it is the derivative of another language, color doesnt reflect that.

Yeah i know, it was a bad choice of words on my behalf.

I know 'American English' is ingrained and that's what's taught in schools, i just don't like the dumbing down of the language (which is what spelling things phonetically does).

The one thing that baffles me about 'American English' is the use of the word "check" (or cheque, to the rest of the world).
People can write a "check", but then they also call a restaurant bill a "check".
    Seems really confusing to me.

'American English', however horrlble to the rest of us, is a legitimate dialect of the traditional English language.

Nah, it's just the way it's taught in America.

It's all good, just frustrates many who use the traditional English.

It is a pity that it is spelt phonetically as it really doesnt help at all with learning foreign languages (including dead ones).

American english only bugs me because I was a linguist for the frist 16 years of my life; classical greek, latin and french.
