since you were asking:

the terms private and forum are mutually exclusive.

one of the strengths of PHUN has always been that it is not private, that there´s no "VIP-area", no "officially nominated" VIP´s (aside the staff and the phun.org-models).
even some slight disadvantages (spammer-"friendliness", for example - but there are easy ways to reduce that by implementing simple administrative, vbulletin-based restrictions) shouldn´t change that.
for me staff only is - for good good reasons - the only needed non-public area here.

either post "open" or use PM or IM´s.

as for the vbulletin-"chat-box": seen places where sections comparable to our general-forum literally died.

 

I agree with you on the 'chat room' idea, Riv, but i have issues with the whole 'no private boards, but still keep the mods board' idea.

I understand why a mods board exists, and i've used them extensively, but i find it a little contradictory to be so strongly against private boards yet support a mods board, which is the absolute definition of a private or exclusive board.

To me, if one is against elitist, private boards they should be against all forms of them (including mod boards), not selectively choosing which ones they support.

I'm not trying to criticise you Riv, just an observation based on your views.

As for the private board itself, i'm not overly fussed either way, but if it's done i'd like to see it be quite exclusive and not based purely on post counts.

 

for me the staff needs a place to discuss things - this is hardly impossible via PM or one of these various IM´s. that´s why i don´t mind a mod-board as the only non-public-area.

 

That's fair enough Riv, i understand your view and the need for a mods board, i just personally think if one has such a strong view, there shouldn't be exclusions.

I just realised, that thread made 303 pages in a day and a half. That's insane. Although I'll bet if we did a similar thing now (and I'm not encouraging it) that this current crop of spammers could out-do that.
