    Oh, i didn't now that.

We speak in metres, obviously, although you still hear jockeys and trainers talk about 'going at the furlong pole' or 'it ran it's last furlong in x time'.

I've noticed your racing seems to have a lot more distance races, whereas we focus on shorter races.

On a typical 8 race city meeting in Australia we'd have 3-4 races over 1000-1200m, 2-3 over a mile (1600m), and perhaps one or two over 2000m.

The longest distance our normal races are is about 2200-2400m.
One every six weeks they have a 3000m race for the spastic horses who are so slow they go backwards.

Generally though, Australian horses go faster than last weeks pay.

I remember when in Adelaide looking at some results in a paper - Races of 1000m or 5 furlongs and thats all I saw - I put that down to how fucking hot it was and the fact no one gave a shit about horse racing :(

Nah, our horses are pretty much all breed to jump and run.

The influence of English sires has meant we've finally got some good long distance breeding, but even our stayers aren't nearly as dour as yours.

    I actually love our racing.
It's fast, quick and entertaining, whereas i tend to get bored watching English horses plod around over 3000m in extremely slow time.

Oh, and in Queensland they actually have races over 800m and 900m, which is fucking ludicrous.

In those races whoever draws a good gate and jumps well, wins.

It's atrocious, and does nothing for the quality of racing.

Mind you, i had a horse a few years ago who was the fastest fucking horse in the land over 800m, but the shortest races in Victoria are over 1000m, and by the end of a 1000m race she'd be gasping for air and struggling to get her legs up and down.

Never seen a faster horse who never won a race :(

I'd neck up if i did that.

I lost a tenner on a horse last night who lost it's race by a lip and i was borderline suicidal. :D

And a tenner is only about 4 quid in your money. :D

Never been a fan of horse racing. We've got several dog tracks around the state, one an hour from me. They're always fun to go to. We sit inside and eat heavy horderves and drink pitchers of beer and bet. They run 3/8 mile and 5/16 mile - whatever that distance translates to.

We only have jumps racing in winter, and usually it's only one race per meeting.

I enjoy jumps racing (easier to find a winner, i think), although our jumps racing is over 2800-3200m, so a fair bit shorter than most of yours.

I owned a horse who become a jumper once.
Had one start in town over the jumps (ridden by an Englishman, actually) and ran a great second, only to break down and never race again.

We really thought he'd be a champion jumper too.

That works out to be 600m and 500m.

Our dogs run between 298m and about 511m (with the odd longer race).

I don't tend to bet on the dogs much, but i like our setup of 8 dogs a race (think it's 6 in England).

How many dogs in a race in America, bama?

    16's into 5/4? Fucking hell, that's a fair go.

My biggest bet on a horse was only about $200, and the thing got beaten in a photo.
Never again going to bet that much, unless i get rich, of course.
