we give about 10% tip but we dont take that as standard and it isnt necessarily anywhere near compulsory

I've never tipped in my life and never been expected to tip.

I'm going to get a fair culture shock in May.
I reckon if i don't tip in New York, someone might slit my throat.

 

I dont see why it should be expected as the norm, it is only a mark of thanks to good service or very well done food

The waiters/waitress makes an extreme low wage and depends on tips to make a living...I don't remember exactly what it is, like $2.25/hour or something like that.

Nah, you won't get you throat slit but it is expected of you to tip if the service was good.

Food has nothing to do with it, it's the service that you receive from your server.

 

we have minimum wage of around $10/hour, that is pay is low

 

Our is like $5.50/hour or something like that - waiters don't fall under that catagory though - because they make tips.

Unless you work for a "well to do" joint - you don't make a lot of money waiting tables, it's usually people working their way through college.

Here a waitress would be getting a minimum $14 AU an hour (which is about $13 US).

I can understand that for waitresses who need to tips to supplement their income, but if someone is getting paid properly i see no reason to tip them.

I don't get tipped for handling someone's financial planning well, and i wouldn't expect it because it's just my job.

BTW Larry David's take on tipping was hilarious in an episode of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'.

I'll remember to tip waitresses in cafes extra well when i'm over there, because tips or not, $2.25 an hour is disgraceful.

Yeah, I don't know what the deal with that is here - I've never understood it. Unfortunately for them that's way it is. Some of them make damn good money in tips though.

If the waitress is earning only $2.25 an hour (or even under $10 an hour), i'll be tipping her far more than 20%.

If it's someone on a good wage, unless they gave me a blowjob i'd have a tough time justifying giving them a tip.
